Translating the Information Needs to the Map

Gunneman GIS & Geomatics is specialized in the translation of the information needs to the map.

We offer two types of services: the Transformation Services based on the software FME, and the Participation GIS Services based on the software Maptionnaire. While the Transformation Services are directed to the transformation of existing data to useful geographical information, a rather extensive information process that for this reason will be explained in another section, the Participation GIS Services are directed to the acquisition of the spatial perceptions of civilians (and other participants).

Participation GIS Services

All our Participation GIS Services are based on Maptionnaire. Maptionnaire is online Participation Software for the setup questionnaires in which (own) maps can be inserted.

Gunneman GIS & Geomatics is the distributor of Maptionnaire for the Netherlands, and we are quite proud of that. Maptionnaire was born after years of scientific research that started as early as 2004 within the field of participation, and gained with that a solid base for spatial investigations into the perceptions of civilians (and other participants). In August 2015 furthermore Gunneman GIS & Geomatics gained the exclusive distribution rights. With that act the online participation software became also available in the Netherlands.

The principle of Maptionnaire is very simple: first a questionnaire is set up by a municipality or other organization. Next the civilians (or other target groups) fill the questionnaire via their computer or smartphone. During the third step the organization can further investigate the response data, and for example generate heat maps to indicate if there is any support amongst the civilians for a certain response. The final step is to discuss the results of the analyses, in public or in a closed meeting, to maintain a dialogue between the civilians and authorities or to simply arrive to a sound plan.

In the section Examples from the Market you can read about the executed pilot at the high school of Mijdrecht, the Netherlands. You can also experience by yourself how Participation GIS works. On www.maptionnaire.com/demo you can participate to a short demo in which the potential of Maptionnaire is shown. You can also setup a questionnaire by yourself by registering at www.maptionnaire.com and experience the user friendliness.

Gunneman GIS & Geomatics sells licenses of Maptionnaire. A training is included. Furthermore we provide support for the use of Maptionnaire and we help in the eventual implementation of response data in existing IT infrastructure.

Transformation GIS Services

Geographical information is only useful if it is reliable, if it is giving insight and if it engages with the user group. Gunneman GIS & Geomatics offers a wide range of consultancy and services to organizations during the entire information process, starting from the mapping of the information needs to the setup of the proper information flows.

Gunneman GIS & Geomatics offers a wide range of consultancy and services for organizations during the entire information process. We can answer any question, concerning the transformation of existing data to useful geographical information, with the information process.

Following the steps in the information process, explained below, we propose a road map. In this way we can guarantee that the geographical information will be reliable, will be insightful and will be engaged by the user group.

This is the information process:

A conversation

The goal of this conversation is to have a clear view of your questions. With a clear view we can discuss how your questions can best be answered. Gunneman GIS & Geomatics loves to share her knowledge and expertise. To reach our goals we also work together with other parties. No commitment is expected after having this conversation.

Information needs

Sometimes it can be unclear what the (geographical) information needs are within an organization. By having interviews  within your organization with you, your department or specific user groups the information needs can be mapped and reported.

Depending on the road map you like to follow, a choice might need to be made what information needs to be satisfied. We can help you making these decisions.

Analysis of existing data

In this step the status of the existing data is investigated. By taking care of both qualitative and quantitative measures the technical analyses are performed. The results will help us to define the next steps.

The analyses are performed as quality control prior to data entry, but can be a stand-alone service as well. In that case we report our findings in the form of a report or a presentation.

Specifications and Logical Data Models

After the analysis of existing data and knowing the information needs specifications and eventual logical data models can be defined.

For the specifications of the end product some research might be needed. For example, in order to keep the computation time within a certain time span the maximum resolution depth might need to be investigated. Also user requirements might need to be described in technical goals.

Eventual logical data models might need to be investigated for use within (future) information services. The information structure will be chosen such that it matches with the target user group. At the same time the administrative tasks are taken into account such that updating the data will not become a burden.

Data transformation

When the information model has been chosen the transformation from existing data to useful information can take place. In this step the optimal road map is investigated and selected. For the execution of manual processes proper guidelines and quality control mechanisms will be established such that human errors can be intercepted. Also the information flows for eventual automatic processing are investigated, including the preparations that need to be made prior to automatic processing.

Automatic processing

Automatic processing can be executed on basis of two different principles: by directly writing and executing computer scripts and by the development and execution of (preprogrammed) transformation models. The advantage of automatic processing using transformation models is that the models are easily adaptable, that no knowledge of program languages is needed and that the models are easily shared with others.

The transformation models are based on ETL software like FME and ArcGIS Model Builder. The automatic process solutions can be delivered with a manual.

.

Access and Visualization

The end product is not the (geographical) information itself, but its access and visualization. Gunneman GIS & Geomatics helps connecting the information to central servers and visualizing the geographical information on existing or new visualization systems. Also Dashboards can be developed using for example Tableau software.

Examples from the Market

Participation GIS at a high school

Participation GIS can be used for many themes and for many target groups. It can be used for high schools, for example.

First the students had to come up with some questions of which they would like to know the answer of if they would arrive at a their first school day, or of which they could improve the school. This resulted in questions like: “What places should you avoid?”, “What are the best places to chill?” and “Where do you believe improve-ments are possible at school?” Based on these and other questions, the questionnaire was set up in which a simple building plan was referenced to the map. Next, the students could participate in the questionnaire in which they also made use of the referenced map.

After answering all the questions the response data had been analyzed. It became apparent, for example, that a corridor between two buildings should be avoided as people were bumping into each other. Also the loveliest class room of the school became clear. This class room was situated on the first floor and had a stunning view over water.

We succeeded in this pilot to gain the (spatial) perceptions of students of their high school. At this moment it is still unclear if any further actions will be undertaken, as some of the students were advocates to present the results to the School Board.
The questionnaire can be visited on www.maptionnaire.com/972.

SLide 1A logical data model for the river bank files

The investigation time for finding the proper river bank data was unacceptable high for a governmental organization. On their request Gunneman GIS & Geomatics investigated the information process of the river bank data.

During interviews with various departments a first view was obtained  of the information needs with respect to the river bank objects. While the department responsible for its maintenance needed information concerning the river bank construction and its construction parts, the department responsible for the policy of waterway management needed information concerning the ownership and (technical) life expectancy.

Further analysis of existing data concluded that different data sources existed and that a number of columns was not consistently filled. Reference of various construction parts was done by using numbers that, without the construction drawing, had no meaning to several users.

To reduce the investigation time the decision had been made to restructure the information model such that the various data files would converge into a single one. A number of columns were combined to a fewer number of columns resulting in a better filling of the columns. Also construction drawings were linked to the geographical data and have the construction parts been renamed to its technical terms.

This resulted in a widely supported river bank information file with a logical information structure for all parties. By implementing a multiple choice model in the future the information will be updated unambiguously.

29210715_mlFrom regulation to geographical information

In the Netherlands and Europe there exist several guideless for the maintenance of the waterway depths. These guidelines are expressed as measures in tables and can be found in various catalogues. Based on the waterway class the proper measures can be found.

For a governmental organization this information was not sufficient. In an interview it became clear that the measures were not easily assigned to areas of interests resulting in the desire to translate the guidelines to geographical maps. Also a request was made to introduce water lanes, based again on guidelines, to reach the berths in the same maps. Furthermore there was the desire to compare the bathymetric (read: measured) depth map such that new insight could arise for dredging purposes.

In an extensive and automatic transformation model various data sources were read. The combination of geographical data objects and table information was used for the automatic generation of a water depth profile data file. After conversion to imagery the water depth profiles were compared to the bathymetric map and a water depth difference map had been generated.

For obtaining the best result we decided that the water lanes could be best drawn manually, after which they were imported into the automatic transformation model. The automatic transformation model had been developed using FME and the Model Builder module of ArcGIS software. The model will be executed after any change in the berth file, resulting into an ever present up-to-date map.

32218252_mlAutomatic inventory lists of geographical objects

In order to obtain financial means every year a government organization needed to file a budget. As the organization is data driven the budget is based on the amount of a selection of objects from the Geographical Information System (GIS). In the past years the inventory list of objects were made manually. This was found to be too labor-intensive and therefore the organization had the desire to process the inventory list automatically in the future.

Except the automatic processing of inventory lists, the desire also existed to make inventory lists per road or waterway trajectory and to unlock these lists in a Dashboard. In this way users can select one or more trajectories and directly obtain the corresponding (sum) amount of objects.

The making of the inventory lists could be automated for the whole process. For about 150 trajectories entire inventory lists could be generated,  and easily reproduced the next year. The transformation model had been developed in FME software, while the Dashboard had been developed in Tableau software.

18913349_mlLines of minimum sight and obstructing objects on the map

Waterway users need to be visible for each other. In catalogues the minimum sight distance can be found per waterway class. These distances of minimum sight can be visualized by generating lines of minimum sight from the waterway axes. Due to turns some lines of minimum sight may cross land and be obstructed by objects. A governmental organization expressed their wish to map these lines of minimum sight and obstructing objects.

In an automatic data transformation model 70,000 lines of minimum sight have been generated and generalized to minimum sight areas. Subsequently altimetric data has been used to find all objects higher than a certain value with respect to the local water level and mask them as obstructing objects.

Using the new maps unlocked in a central visualization system, civil servants can nowadays check by their own if appropriate measures need to be taken into account. In some cases a local speed limit needs to be adjusted, while in other cases the obstructing object can be removed.
